Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is an exciting emerging phenomenon. However, DeFi can be bit overwhelming for someone just getting started with it.
We’ve collaborated with some of the best DeFi educators to create the DeFi 101 guide. This is our attempt to introduce the fundamentals of DeFi in an easy-to-understand format.

Chapter 1

What is DeFi?

Financial services are typically facilitated by institutions such as Banks, Exchanges, and Brokerages. In DeFi, instead of large institutions, open-source programs called smart contracts that execute on blockchain networks enable these financial services.
Chapter 2

Building Blocks of DeFi

DeFi is a new form of global finance accessible to all and controlled by no single entity. The key building blocks of DeFi are Blockchain Networks, Crypto Tokens, and DeFi Protocols.

What is a Blockchain Network?

A Blockchain Network is a peer-to-peer network that maintains a distributed ledger of transactions called Blockchain and enables execution of different sets of code called smart contracts without any centralized entity.
Chapter 4

What are Crypto Tokens?

Tokens are digital assets created on blockchain networks.There are two types of tokens: Fungible: Divisible and non-unique, like the US dollar and Non-Fungible: Unique, like a 1 of 1 action figure. Fungible tokens are often referred to as cryptocurrencies, while non-fungible tokens are known as NFTs.

Lending and Borrowing in DeFi

In traditional finance, banks source capital from institutions and consumers and lend out a portion of these deposits. In DeFi, lending and borrowing is powered by smart contracts that programmatically issue loans, set interest rates, and manage controls to prevent bad debt.

Decentralized Exchanges

Decentralized Exchanges are marketplaces that allow users to trade crypto tokens in a non-custodial way without a central intermediary. It leverages smart contract algorithms to build an independent pool of tokens from which users can trade or ‘swap’ assets.

Staking

Staking is a process of validating transactions on a proof-of-stake network model via a consensus mechanism & earning rewards or APYs while doing so.

Crypto Derivatives in DeFi

Derivatives are contracts between two parties that derive its value from an underlying entity. This entity could be stocks, bonds, commodities, or crypto tokens. Crypto Derivatives help manage financial risks and enable traders to speculate on future price movements of the underlying asset.

Yield Optimization Protocols

Yield Optimization Protocols such as Yearn Finance and Beefy Finance specialize in maximizing yields by automatically moving funds within a set of integrated underlying protocols.
Chapter 10

Risks in DeFi

Innovation risk is an age-old story. The DeFi industry is new, and the risk it entails transfers to the users. Some risks to consider with DeFi are scams, hacks, fluctuating yields causing losses, & abandoned projects.
